Artist Statement
Pennswood Art Gallery
March 21, 2021 – May 9, 2021

Painting with fluorescent pigments while being inspired from my digital photography create the focus of this body of work completed during 3/2020 – 3/2021,

Viewing these paintings “completely” can only be done live and in-person since fluorescence cannot be fully reproduced through photography or videography. While photographs of fluorescent paint colors will indicate a heightened sense of color, they will not fully capture the true vibrancy created by the wavelengths discharged from the lit fluorescent pigment. Human eye receptors are much more sensitive in translating fluorescent colors and the wavelengths they emit. My experiences and sensations looking at and painting with fluorescents in the last year have been quite physical ranging from vibration sensations to sensing sparks or color bursts illuminating off or within surfaces and admittedly, visual fatigue.

Replacing traditional color palettes for use of these rogue fluorescent pigments allows for further expansion and reinterpretation of a sense of time and place. This color palette can offer a unique role for the viewer, a heightened visual sensation, such as I have indicated, a physiology of color experience. Spending time with these works is much like “reading their energy” allowing for new and personal discoveries, experiences and reflections.

Each composition has been carefully considered to maximize the use of every inch giving shape and color their due justice. Many compositions engage the use of juxtaposed panels. This technique offers multiple viewing choices, different windows to enter, exit, group together, and/or segregate creating endless variations in approaching one piece. Some paintings offer no delineations of space or use of panels but smooth transitions as if the composition is one, singular space to consider. It may be of interest to note that every painting references at least three and up to six different photographic images. Some compositions are composed to look as if scenes were of one singular place or point in time.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity of having these works exhibited together. It is my hope that viewing these works offers unique and worthwhile experiences to all who can visit the space. Certainly now, the concept of “live/in person” has new challenges and limitations. It is ironic to me that the current pandemic prohibits the gallery to be seen or visited by the public. I believe this precaution remains the current and unfortunate status quo of the gallery operation, as it was upon agreement for this exhibit. Having the opportunity to see all these works of the past year hang together is always worthwhile regardless of public parameters.
